Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE)

The Ministry of Water and Environment (MWE) was established in 2007, from the then Ministry of Water, Lands and Environment, following the cabinet decision taken on 15th April, 2007. It has the overall responsibility of the development, managing, and regulating water and Environment resources in Uganda.

In the process of executing all its operations, the Ministry is committed to zero tolerance to fraud and corruption as guided by the existing legal national frameworks and institutions.

Mandated by Uganda’s Constitution and the Local Government Act, the Ministry holds statutory authority for legislative initiation, policy formulation, standard-setting, regulatory inspections, compliance monitoring, cross-sector coordination, and technical support provision in all matters pertaining to water resources and environmental management.

To promote efficient and effective utilization of water and environment resources for a healthy, wealthy and climate resilient population.

  1. To increase the provision of bulk water for multipurpose uses.
  2. To increase access to safe & clean water and sanitation & hygiene services in rural and
    urban areas.
  3. To strengthen integrated and sustainable management of water, environment and natural
    resources
  4. To coordinate climate change interventions and increase the accuracy and access to
    weather and climate information.
  5. To strengthen policy, legal, regulatory and coordination frameworks for MWE.
